Ivy Pearson
''Ivy Pearson'' is a fictional character in the 1931 horror film ''Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'' portrayed originally by Miriam Hopkins. She was also played by Ingrid Bergman in the 1941 remake. ==Character Summary== Ivy Pearson is a kind-hearted prostitute who encounters the protagonist of the film, Dr. Jekyll, after she had been assaulted by a client of hers one night. Jekyll helps her to get home where she charmingly attempts to seduce him. Jekyll is tempted, embraces and kisses her, but they are interrupted by Dr. Jekyll's friend, Dr. Lanyon. Jekyll leaves with kind words for Ivy and concern for her welfare but with no plans to continue their acquaintance. Jekyll goes home, where he continues work on a chemical compound he has invented that transforms him into his evil alter ego, the monstrous Mr. Hyde, who bears no physical or temperamental resemblance to Dr. Jekyll. As Mr. Hyde, he seeks out Ivy in a music hall, where he charms her at first, but then frightens her into taking him home and forces her to become his mistress. In repeated visits, his cruelty and her subjugation increase. She has multiple injuries and attempts to take her life to escape him. Her landlady, Mrs. Hawkins, suggests she go to Dr. Jekyll for help and treatment. When admitted into Dr. Jekyll's presence, Ivy describes Mr. Hyde's actions, showing the welts left on her back from being whipped. She breaks down and throws herself at Jekyll's feet, offering her life and her devotion to him in exchange for his help in rescuing her. Horrified at the torture he has inflicted on her as Hyde, he kindly refuses her offer and presses her to accept enough money from him to make good on her escape from Hyde. After Ivy has left, Dr. Jekyll sets out for a dinner party where his wedding to his long-time fiancée, Muriel Carewe, is to be announced and celebrated. He elects to walk across the park to get there. During the walk, Jekyll sees a black cat kill a bird and cut its lovely song short. This brute killing awakens Mr. Hyde, and a spontaneous transformation takes place. Hyde replaces Jekyll, and the Doctor is helpless to stop it. Hyde, bent on revenge, rushes away. He finds Ivy celebrating what she thinks is her freedom, where he attacks and overpowers her before strangling her to death.
